The Influence of Iron Load on the Concentration of Tissue Storage Iron in the Adrenalectomized Rabbits

Abstract
The author injected colloidal iron intravenously not only into normal rabbits but also bilaterally adrenalectomized rabbits in order to measure concentration of storage iron in liver, spleen, renal cortex and medulla, bone marrow and duodenum, and obtained the following conclusions from the experimental results and their analysis:
(1) In the bilaterally adrenalectomized rabbits, the storage iron decreased markedly in the liver, showed tendency of decrease in the spleen and renal cortex but disclosed no significant changes in the renal medulla as well as in the duodenum.
(2) In the bilaterally adrenalectomized rabbits given colloidal iron, the storage iron accumulated transiently in the liver, spleen, renal cortex and bone marrow as in normal rabbit given the colloidal iron, but they were unable to store the iron for a long period and also there was no response at all toward the administration of iron as in the case of normal rabbit.
(3) It is believed that there is no abnormality in the mechanism of storage but release of iron in the bilaterally adrenalectomized rabbits.
